Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model—within a deep learning approach—on the interest and learning outcomes in Indonesian language studies among fourth-grade students at UPT SPF SDN Malewang, Makassar City. A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design (specifically, a non-equivalent control group design) was employed, involving 19 students in the experimental class and 19 in the control class. The learning outcome test and learning interest questionnaire were theoretically validated through expert judgment and empirically tested on 20 students outside the sample using Product Moment correlation and Cronbach's Alpha reliability testing (0.808, high category). Data analysis utilized the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene's test, N-Gain analysis, and the Independent Sample t-test. The results showed that the experimental class's average post-test score (78.42) was higher than that of the control class (65.79), with average N-Gain scores of 0.58 and 0.31, respectively (both in the medium category). The independent-samples t-tests showed significant differences between the two classes in learning outcomes (t = 4.512, df = 36, p < 0.001) and in learning interest (t = 5.203, df = 36, p < 0.001); consequently, the null hypotheses (H₀₁ and H₀₂) were rejected and the alternative hypotheses (Hₐ₁ and Hₐ₂) were accepted. It is concluded that the CIRC model, within a deep learning approach, has a positive and significant effect on the interest and learning outcomes in Indonesian language studies among fourth-grade students. The novelty of this study lies in explicitly mapping the CIRC syntax onto the meaningful, mindful, and joyful principles of deep learning, offering teachers a practical, collaborative reading–writing design that can raise interest and learning outcomes in Indonesian language learning at the same time
